Route 606 Widening Project Signing Ceremony Postponed

Patch reports that a signing ceremony marking a partnership between the Virginia Department of Transportation, Loudoun County and the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority to widen Route 606 along the west side of Dulles International Airport has been postponed, that according to VDOT.

"The ceremony was announced last week and the delay was announced over the weekend. Construction is expected to start late next year on the project, which will add two lanes to a 5.3-mile stretch of the road from the Dulles Greenway to Evergreen Mills Road."

Proposed 2014 Transportation Projects

The Ashburn Patch reports that the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority is looking for the public’s input on upcoming transportation projects proposed for 2014. The public hearing will take place at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 24 in the council chambers in the city of Fairfax, 10455 Armstrong Street.

Loudoun County Projects

• Belmont Ridge Road, North of the Dulles Greenway$20,000,000: Widens Belmont Ridge Road (Route 659) between Glouchester Parkway and Hay Road from two lanes to four lanes. 
• New grade-separated interchange on Edwards Ferry Road at the Route 15 Leesburg Bypass $1,000,000: The project description states that the intersection is currently congested and that the work would enhance traffic flow. 
• Two new transit buses $880,000: Two 40-foot buses to allow for Silver Line transit services from a new park-and-ride facility called the East Gate Park-n-Ride along Tall Cedars Parkway.

Virginia Regional Transit Funds in Jeopardy

According to the Ashburn Patch, the latest U.S. Census report could mean big changes for bus service in Leesburg and Loudoun County.

Patch reports that "Because of a change in designation from “rural” to “urban,” Virginia Regional Transit will stop operating in the Loudoun after Sept. 30 if replacement funds cannot be found, according to a memo sent from County Administrator Tim Hemstreet to the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors."

Leesburg Mayor Kristen Umstattd said that if this amendment does not pass the General Assembly, then the service would end Sept. 30.

Umstattd said that Congressman Wolf’s office has been helpful in trying to facilitate a solution, “but with the impasse on Capitol Hill, it does not look promising for our residents who use VRT buses to get to work and back.”
