Closure of Smith Switch Road

You may have noticed the closure of Smith Switch Road recently.

According to Supervisor Lori Water's Broad Run District Newsletter, "the developer in that area is paving the portion from the W & OD Trail south to Chilum Place. Due to some mismarked utilities and weather delays, the project is projected to be completed by the end of May. A portion of the road north of the trail will remain unpaved, as there is currently no funding or developer proffer to pave it."

New Traffic Signal

From the Supervisor Lori L. Waters' Broad Run District News e-mail newsletter comes news of a new traffic signal in the Broad Run District.

"Finally after years of waiting, designs, and redesigns, the signal at Belmont Ridge Road and Gloucester Parkway is operational. Due to multiple design changes and suggestions at VDOT, the approval and installation process was consistently delayed. Finally, just last month, this signal became operational and will protect drivers at this busy intersection. Toll Brothers installed this light as part of their proffers for the Belmont community."

It Takes Roads and Transit to Make Washington Traffic Work for Everybody

Did you see yesterday's opinion/editorial (op/ed) column by Lori Waters, Broad Run District representative on the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors, in the Washington Examiner? She wrote about the need for diversity in transportation options, noting that "A one size 'transit for all' solution will not work."

Have you noticed the construction on I-66 westbound around George Mason drive? It isn’t all for the Metrorail extension. Thanks to a hard fought battle by Transportation Planning Board (TPB) outer jurisdiction members last spring, commuters now have at least a little more room on their way home in the evenings. As a commuter and TPB member, I am thankful!

The battle for these small improvements, though completely funded by congressional earmarks (I’ll let that one slide), points to the transportation problems TPB fails to address—transit is not the only solution to congestion.

Thank You to Wolf

Loudoun County Supervisor Lori Waters (Broad Run District) expressed appreciation to Congressman Frank Wolf for his recent letter to Virginia Secretary of Transportation Sean Connaughton urging him to consider legislation and other means of reducing the tolls on the Dulles Greenway. (see July 29 Loudoun County Traffic article.)

"We all know the costs on the Greenway are too high and we very much appreciate the help from our federal representative in making our case for toll reduction," said Waters in her July district newsletter.
