The Loudoun County Office of Mapping and Geographic Information has created maps of five of Loudoun County’s election districts that show the polling places in each district as well as available local and commuter bus routes.
The maps for the five election districts – Algonkian, Ashburn, Broad Run, Leesburg, and Sterling – are online at www.flickr.com/omagi.
If you’re not sure what district you should vote in, you should check your new voter card, which reflect the redistricting plan adopted by the Board of Supervisors in April.

Metrorail to Open Two Hours Early Tomorrow for Marathon
Metrorail will open two hours early tomorrow, Sunday, Oct. 30, -- at 5 a.m. -- for the Marine Corps Marathon. Buses that normally operate to/from the Pentagon will be rerouted to Pentagon City between 4 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Loyalty Road Detour Postponed
The small bridge on Loyalty Road, located about 4.5 miles north of Waterford in Loudoun County, was scheduled to be closed for repairs this weekend. But with the possibility of inclement weather this weekend, including the possibility of several inches of snow, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has postponed the repairs, tentatively re-scheduling the work for next weekend, Nov. 5-6.
When the work is done, VDOT crews will replace the bridge in the exact same footprint. The existing steel beam and timber deck bridge will be replaced with an all-timber bridge.

Dodge Terrace at Farmwell Road Now Open
The Loudoun County Sheriffs Office reports that Dodge Terrace at Farmwell Road is now open.

Sobriety Checkpoint Tonight in University Station Area of Loudoun County
The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office will conduct a sobriety checkpoint tonight, Friday, October 21.
The sobriety checkpoint will be held from 10 p.m. tonight until 3 a.m. Saturday morning in the University Station area (Ashburn/Lansdowne) of Loudoun County.
The Sheriff’s Office designed the checkpoints to raise public awareness and to discourage impaired driving.
“Our ultimate goal is to ensure the roads are safe for all motorists by achieving voluntary compliance with the drinking and driving laws,” said Loudoun County Sheriff Steve Simpson.
Members of the Sheriff’s Office Auxiliary Unit and volunteers from the Loudoun Chapter of MADD will assist with the checkpoint.

Pacific Boulevard Extension
According to an article in The Loudoun Times, the extension of Pacific Boulevard in Sterling has been years in the making.
"On Oct. 19, several Loudoun Board of Supervisors members, Del. Tag Greason, several members representing the Kincora development and VDOT representatives gathered to break ground for the extension of Pacific Boulevard off Route 28.
"The extension is part of the Kincora development, a 424-acre mixed-use community that will be built between Routes 7 and 28. The development will host office, retail and residential spaces, including the much-anticipated baseball stadium that will be home to the Loudoun Hounds baseball team. The development will also host a 167-acre park, trails, a heron rookery observation deck and performing arts center."

Northern Virginia Transportation Meeting
Secretary of Transportation Sean T. Connaughton and the Commonwealth Transportation Board will host a meeting in Fairfax next Tuesday, Oct. 25, for the public to provide input on the development of the Six-Year Improvement Program for fiscal years 2013-2018. The program includes multimodal highway, rail and public transportation initiatives.
The meeting will be held at VDOT’s Northern Virginia Office, 4975 Alliance Drive in Fairfax. The meeting starts at 6 p.m.
From 6-6:30 p.m. the public can visit displays and meet representatives from the Virginia departments of Transportation, Rail and Public Transportation, Aviation, Motor Vehicles and Port Authority.
Following the open house session, individuals can speak for up to three minutes or submit written comments. Speakers may register at the door; there is no pre-registration.

Update: The Loudoun County Sheriffs Office now reports that westbound at West Market Street and North King Street, which had been closed earlier this morning to a water leak, has now been re-opened.

The Pitfalls of Texting
Texting – or emailing – while driving slows reaction time and makes drivers more likely to miss a flashing light, that according to new research from Texas A&M University’s Texas Transportation Institute.
In the study, 42 drivers between the ages of 16 and 54 drove on an 11-mile test course while sending or receiving text messages, and again while focusing completely on the road. The researchers asked the drivers to stop when they saw a flashing yellow light and recorded their reaction time.
The typical reaction time without texting was between one and two seconds, but while texting it increased to three to four seconds, regardless of whether the driver was typing or reading a text. The researchers also found that a texting driver was 11 times more likely to miss the flashing light.

$7.2 Million Traffic Calming Project Breaks Ground in Aldie
Congressman Frank Wolf, the Route 50 Task Force and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) broke ground this past Friday morning, Oct. 7, on a $7.2 million traffic calming project for the village of Aldie, located between Middleburg and Gilberts Corner in Loudoun County.
When completed in December 2012, Route 50 in Aldie will be transformed from a through highway to a village street, similar to the traffic calming project completed in Upperville.
Drivers approaching Aldie will be transitioned to the town speed limit with landscaping, sidewalks, and raised crosswalks and intersections in the village area. A series of pavers will be spaced to get drivers' attention. At the entrance to the village, the speed limit changes to 25 mph.
Traffic calming measures within Aldie include raised intersections, tree-planted medians, varying paving materials to indicate parking, walking, and driving areas, strategically placed greenery along the streets, and safer pedestrian walkways.
Drainage improvements will enclose a deep roadside ditch with a storm sewer system.
The materials used for the sidewalks, curbs, crosswalks, and raised intersections have been chosen to complement the historic and rural nature of the community.
The $7.2 million price tag includes $2.1 million for design, $300,000 for right of way acquisition and $4.8 million for construction.
This is the third traffic calming project on the rural Route 50 corridor in Fauquier and Loudoun counties designed to slow traffic, improve safety for pedestrians and motorists, and help preserve the historic and rural nature of the corridor.
The $7.8 million Upperville traffic calming project was completed in fall 2008, and the $16.1 million Gilberts Corner project, which replaced intersection with roundabouts, was completed in 2009. More information on the projects is available at www.Route50.org and www.VirginiaDOT.org.
