Presidential Visit to Affect Traffic Today in and Around Leesburg

Today, the President of the United States will visit Leesburg for a campaign event at Loudoun County High School, 415 Dry Mill Road SW. A number of road closures will occur prior to and during the presidential visit. The campaign event is a ticketed event and no one will be admitted to the event area without a ticket. It will not be possible to view any portion of the event from outside the event area. Tickets are being distributed by the Obama for America re-election campaign, not by the Town of Leesburg or the Leesburg Police Department.

In order to facilitate travel and ensure public safety during the presidential visit, the Leesburg Police Department advises everyone to avoid the area unless attending the event. Again, the event is a ticketed one and every attendee must have a ticket. The following roads will be closed today, Thursday, Aug. 2:

1. Dry Mill Road, from Catoctin Circle to Wage Drive, beginning at 2:30 p.m. through the end of the event.

2. Catoctin Circle, from Rosemeade Drive to Belmont Drive, beginning at 2:30 p.m. through the end of the event.

3. Lee Avenue, from Dominion Academy to Dry Mill Road, beginning at 4:30 p.m. through the end of the event.  Neighborhoods off Dry Mill Road, west of Lee Avenue, will be accessible via Dry Mill Road from west of the town limits.

Once these roads are closed to vehicular traffic, pedestrian access will be limited to event ticketholders only.  Beginning at 7 a.m., all pedestrian access into the event area will be stopped.  Event attendees are advised to arrive at the event site as early as possible.

In addition, the W&OD Trail will be closed from Catoctin Circle to western town limits beginning at 6:30 p.m. Trail users headed eastbound from outside the town limits will be able to continue east, around the restricted area, on town trails through the Fox Ridge neighborhood after 6:30 p.m.

A map online on the Town of Leesburg's website http://www.leesburgva.gov/index.aspx?page=29&recordid=1893 shows these road closures, as well as designated no parking areas. Gates for the event will open at 5:30 p.m.

The Obama for America campaign recommends that attendees park at the Loudoun County Fairground, 17558 Dry Mill Road, Leesburg). Shuttle buses will be available to transport attendees to and from the event site, beginning at 4 p.m.
