Carters School Road Naming Ceremony Held This Past Weekend

A recent Board of Supervisors resolution was carried out this past Sunday, Nov. 18, when Bears School Road (Route 857) was formally renamed Carters School Road

Leesburg District Supervisor Kenneth D. Reid and Dulles District Supervisor Matthew F. Letourneau sponsored the resolution to rename the road at the request of Christena Fulcher and her daughter Carolyn Lineberry. Fulcher attended Carter's School, a one-room schoolhouse, in the 1930s. The road mistakenly was named Bears School Road, after a school a few miles away.

"It's an honor to be here to right a wrong from 24 years ago," said Reid during Sunday's brief ceremony. The Board of Supervisors "was pleased to be able to do this," said Letourneau.

In addition to Reid, Letourneau, Fulcher and Lineberry, historian and Catoctin District Planning Commissioner Eugene Scheel attended Sunday's ceremony at the road's intersection with Old Ox Road (Route 606). Scheel helped bring public attention to the issue when he wrote about the road's name in The Washington Post.
