In Virginia in 2012, preliminary analysis shows there were 3,065 crashes in highway work zones across the state. The crashes resulted in 13 deaths and 1,582 injuries. Overall the number of crashes decreased by 11 percent and injuries were down by 13 percent over 2011 statistics, but fatalities increased by 18 percent.
Nationally, more than 700 people are killed and more than 37,000 are injured each year in crashes in highway work zones. Those deaths account for approximately two percent of highway fatalities. On average, four out of five people killed in work zone crashes are motorists or their passengers.
