Use Caution Near Morven Park Area this Evening

If you're going to be traveling near Morven Park in Leesburg late this afternoon, the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office is advising motorists (and pedestrians) to be mindful of increased traffic in the area around 6 p.m. tonight.

The increased traffic in Northwest Leesburg is due to a special event at Morven Park.

Please drive carefully, decrease speed and obey law enforcement directions if you are in the area this afternoon/evening.

Sycolin Road Project Update; Community Meetings Announced

This summer, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will start work on a $20 million project to improve safety and traffic flow by replacing the existing signalized intersection with an overpass carrying Sycolin Road over the Route 7/15 Bypass in Leesburg.

The project will eliminate the traffic signal and existing turn lanes from the Route 7/15 Bypass to Sycolin Road, and from Sycolin Road to the Bypass, removing direct access between the two roads.

The new bridge over the Bypass will include two 12-foot travel lanes in each direction, sidewalk along the southbound lanes, and a barrier-separated, shared-use path along the northbound lanes.

Traffic Impacts
During construction, Sycolin Road will be closed to traffic between Gateway Drive and Hope Parkway, and drivers can expect periodic day and night lane closures, and some overnight complete road closures on the Route 7/15 Bypass. Most overnight road closures will be brief, lasting 20-25 minutes. Message boards will be in place approaching the project area in each direction on Sycolin Road and on the Route 7/15 Bypass throughout the project to notify drivers of scheduled closures.

Sycolin Road detour – Beginning June 8, Sycolin Road will be closed between Gateway Drive and Hope Parkway while crews build the overpass. The closure is expected to last through mid-August 2014.
Detour signs will in place to direct drivers to the following alternate routes (detailed, color-coded map):

• North detour (green route): Westbound Battlefield Parkway to Miller Drive SE to westbound Dulles Greenway (Rt. 267) to eastbound Rt. 7/15 Bypass to westbound Rt. 7 to Plaza Street SE/Sycolin Road (This section of Greenway does not require a toll).
• South detour (blue route): Plaza Street to eastbound Rt. 7 to westbound Rt. 7/15 Bypass to eastbound Dulles Greenway (Rt. 267) to eastbound Battlefield Parkway to Sycolin Road (This section of Greenway does not require a toll).
• Alternate north detour (purple route): Eastbound Battlefield Parkway to westbound Rt. 7 to Plaza Street SE/Sycolin Road
• Alternate south detour (yellow route): Eastbound Rt. 7/15 Bypass to eastbound Rt. 7 to westbound Battlefield Parkway to Sycolin Road.

Access between Sycolin Road and the Bypass – When construction begins June 8, direct access to and from the Bypass will be removed permanently. When the Sycolin Road overpass opens in 2014, drivers will continue to use the suggested alternate routes to access Sycolin Road from the Bypass and the Bypass from Sycolin Road.

Community Meetings
Residents are invited to meet the project team and learn more about construction and traffic impacts from 7 to 8 p.m. on April 4, at Cool Springs Elementary School, 501 Tavistock Drive SE in Leesburg.

VDOT will also hold a “pardon our dust” meeting in May prior to the start of construction. The date, time and location for this meeting will be announced later.

Motorists Should Anticipate Delays in and Around Leesburg Wednesday due to Campaign Event

In anticipation of a campaign event tomorrow, Wednesday, Oct. 17, at Ida Lee Park in the Town of Leesburg, the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office is advising motorists to expect delays in and around the town, including on the Route 15/Route 7 bypass, between 4 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

Motorists traveling in this area during the afternoon and evening hours should expect some traffic congestion and delays.

Please be patient, drive safely and follow all law enforcement direction.

Also, due to the campaign event, Rust Library will close at 1 p.m. tomorrow.  Ida Lee Recreation Center and Tennis Center also will close at 1 p.m., and Ida Lee Drive will be closed to all traffic beginning at 2 p.m.

With gates for the 6:30 p.m. campaign rally opening at 4:30 p.m., Leesburg officials are cautioning drivers to expect significant traffic delays in the northern section of Leesburg Wednesday afternoon.

Leesburg Traffic Committee Endorses Tavistock Crosswalk

Following months of discussion on how to address speeding and pedestrian safety concerns in the Tavistock Farms neighborhood, Leesburg's Standing Residential Traffic Committee has endorsed a potential remedy, that according to the Leesburg Today.

Committee members unanimously voted Monday night to support the installation of a crosswalk at the intersection of Tavistock Drive and Burnside Terrace. It was but one of several requests by representatives of the Tavistock Farms HOA, who have spent months pondering what the best solution was to cut down on speeding in the neighborhood.

Town staff members recommended the installation of a crosswalk at the intersection of Tavistock Drive and Burnside Terrace, and the relocation of the speed limit sign at the intersection of Tavistock Drive and Battlefield Parkway. A stop sign study conducted by town staff showed that federal warrants were met based on the existing traffic volumes.

Expect Major Delays on Market Street Near Battlefield Parkway in Leesburg

Tomorrow and Monday (Sept. 26-27), motorists can expect major delays on Market Street (Route 7 Business) near Battlefield Parkway in Leesburg while Dominion Virginia Power crews continue pulling wires across the roads for a new power line.

Traffic will be stopped for up to 20 minutes at a time on Sunday from 6:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. just west of Battlefield Parkway and on Monday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the intersection of Battlefield Parkway and Market Street.

State Police and VDOT will monitor traffic, and will temporarily suspend stoppages to relieve backups should they become significant.

The work is part of Dominion Virginia Power’s construction of a 12-mile, high-voltage power line from a new substation northwest of Hamilton, near the intersection of Berlin Turnpike and Route 7, to a substation off Cochran Mill Road east of Leesburg. The project requires crews to string electric lines along about nine miles of VDOT roads, crossing them a total of 15 times.

Multi-Jurisdiction Pursuit initiated on Rt 7 in Clarke County Ends Near Leesburg

A suspect who fled from authorities in Clarke County, Va., has been apprehended after being involved in a high-speed pursuit that ended near the Town of Leesburg.

Around 3:20 p.m. this afternoon, Thursday, December 10, Loudoun Sheriff’s Deputies were advised that a vehicle fled from law enforcement after a traffic stop in Clarke County and was entering Loudoun County on eastbound Route 7. The subject struck one other vehicle while fleeing from authorities. There were no serious injuries reported.

The vehicle traveled at a high rate of speed and its tires were damaged by two stop-sticks placed in the vehicle’s path during the pursuit. The vehicle continued to drive on at least three flat tires before being stopped shortly after 3:30 p.m. on Route 7 near the Dulles Greenway interchange.
The suspect was taken into custody and charges are pending. More details will be released as they become available.

Residents who believe their vehicle may have been damaged during the incident are asked to file a report with the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office at 703-777-1021.

Leesburg to Look Into Ways to Cut Down on Traffic

According to today's Loudoun Extra, Leesburg officials are planning a summit to solicit ideas from the public for getting cars off town roads, in an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and lessen commute times.

"Town Council member David S. Butler presented the proposal during a council work session Monday. He said he thought about organizing a summit after he learned how much time Leesburg residents spend commuting. They have an average one-way trip of 30.3 minutes, compared with the national average of 25.1 minutes, according to a recent U.S. Census Bureau survey."

"Among Leesburg residents, 15.7 percent work in town, with the majority commuting to jobs in eastern Loudoun, Fairfax or Arlington counties, according to the survey. Council members said the summit would need to involve officials beyond the town's limits."

The paper reported that town staff members will recommend a date and location for the summit during the next council work session this month.

What's the Most Dangerous Intersection in Leesburg?

According to the Loudoun Extra, the intersection at Sycolin Road and the Leesburg Bypass was the most dangerous in Leesburg during 2008, that according to accident statistics compiled by the Leesburg Police Department. The data comes from crash reports completed by the Leesburg Police Department and does not include auto accidents worked by either the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office or by the Virginia State Police.
