Why is the Dulles Greenway Called a Greenway?

For the answer, we turn to the Washington Post's Dr. Gridlock, who on today's online chat got that question. According to the good doctor, about the only explanation was that "It was probably considered an alternative to "parkway," applied to U.S. motor roadways starting in the early 20th century, when driving was still considered a pleasure."

Dr. Gridlock also noted that "The first reference I can find in The Washington Post is from a September 1993 story, where the highway is called the Dulles toll road extension, "also known as" the Dulles Greenway."

Also discussed today was E-ZPass, inauguration day traffic and Metro among other topics.

  1. I heard that it was because someone who got the road built was named "Green".
