Study to Investigate Transportation Demand Across the Potomac

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will sponsor and fund a study to describe future travel demand across the Potomac River. The study will examine cross-river traffic and movement demand at existing crossings from Points of Rocks in Virginia to Route 301 in Maryland.

This effort will start in the coming weeks and is expected to be completed in the spring, and will engage with the D.C. Department of Transportation and the Maryland Department of Transportation.

The study will develop a common set of data from which Virginia, D.C. and Maryland can discuss approaches to ease congestion and increase multi-modal mobility among the three jurisdictions.

The next step after the study will be for the jurisdictions to develop a collaborative and mutually beneficial strategy to address the problem.
