New Texting Law Goes Into Effect July 1

Beginning Monday, July 1, texting and driving in Virginia will become more than irresponsible, it will be against the law.

Police will be able to pull over any motorist they see texting behind the wheel. If you are caught texting, the first violation will cost $125 and $250 for the second.

Since the new law now makes texting a primary offense, officers will not need another reason to stop drivers they see texting. The new law doesn't apply to drivers of emergency vehicles, stopped vehicles, use of factory-installed GPS devices, or the use of handheld devices to report an emergency.
