Work on Route 7-659 Interchange to Begin

The Loudoun County government has issued a "notice to proceed" for the Route 7/Route 659 (Belmont Ridge Road) interchange and widening project. Work on the interchange at the intersection of Route 7 and Belmont Ridge Road is planned for 36 months. The county has launched a web page (www.loudoun.gov/Route7-659) to keep the public informed about the project as it progresses.

The Route 7/Route 659 intersection is currently an at-grade intersection with traffic signals. The intersection is being designed for a grade-separated interchange in accordance with the Countywide Transportation Plan.  The project also includes approximately 1.4 miles of reconstruction of Belmont Ridge Road from two-lanes to a four-lane divided section from the interchange limits at Route 7 to Gloucester Parkway.

On May 20, the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors awarded the contract for the construction of the interchange to Shirley Contracting in the amount of about $48.3 million.  The project is being funded through a combination of local, state and federal funds and in coordination with the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The Loudoun County Department of Transportation and Capital Infrastructure is managing the design and construction of the project. In addition to the county, the engineer of record is Dewberry, the general contractor is Shirley Contracting, and the consultant is McDonough Bolyard Peck, Inc.

Shirley Contracting will be mobilizing on the project site in the upcoming weeks.  Motorists can expect to see electronic message boards indicating the start of work and motorists shall be aware of construction activities.  The county and project team will provide public notices throughout the project through the county's website.

A groundbreaking is expected to be scheduled for a date in October. Once the date is selected, it will be posted on the county website along with other updates about the project at www.loudoun.gov/Route7-659. Information about other Loudoun County capital projects is available at www.loudoun.gov/underconstruction.
