Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has launched “E-ZPass On-the-Go,” which will allow customers to obtain E-ZPass transponders at various locations of AAA Mid-Atlantic, Wegmans and Giant, the program’s first retail partners. Drivers can get prepaid E-ZPass transponders at select outlets of these retailers for use on all toll roads in Virginia and 13 other states.
AAA Mid-Atlantic has 13 locations in Virginia that offer “E-ZPass On-the-Go,” including Fairfax, Richmond, Lynchburg and Fredericksburg. Throughout Northern Virginia, Wegmans has six stores that offer the standard E-ZPass and E-ZPass Flex transponders through the “On-the-Go” program. Giant recently announced that 20 of its stores will participate in the program. VDOT expects to announce additional “E-ZPass On-the-Go” retail partners in Central Virginia and Hampton Roads in the fall.
E-ZPass is an electronic toll-collection system that makes paying tolls fast and easy for drivers through the use of a transponder, which automatically deducts tolls from an account that can be connected to the user’s bank or credit-card accounts.
E-ZPass Flex is a new transponder that works like a typical E-ZPass, with an additional function that permits free use of the Interstate 495 Express Lanes (Capital Beltway) in Northern Virginia for vehicles with three or more occupants.
“E-ZPass On-the-Go” provides another way for drivers to obtain an E-ZPass or an E-ZPass Flex transponder through select stores and businesses. Drivers simply pay $35, and the E-ZPass can be used immediately with a $15 toll credit. An additional $20 is available for tolls when the transponder is registered online at www.EZPassVA.com or by telephone at 877-762-7824 or 800-828-1120 (for TTY users) before or after its first use.
Virginia joins several other “E-ZPass On-the-Go” states, including New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey and New Hampshire.
E-ZPass services also are available at two Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) locations at 813 Greenbrier Road in Chesapeake and 1968 Gallows Road in Vienna (near Tysons Corner). Customers can visit these DMV offices for full E-ZPass services, including account sign-up, obtaining additional transponders, payments and replacing transponders.
Flex transponders are available at the Vienna/Tysons Corner location for those customers who want to exchange their standard transponder for a Flex transponder or to add a Flex transponder to their account. Providing these services at additional DMV locations is targeted for 2013.
Transponders can also be obtained online, by calling a toll-free number or by visiting an E-ZPass Customer Service Center. For more information, visit www.EZPassVA.com.
