VDOT to Suspend Highway Work Zones During New Year's Holiday

VDOT will suspend most highway work zones for several days over the holidays to limit congestion and provide as many travel lanes as possible.

VDOT will lift lane closures on interstates and other major roads in Virginia during the following dates and times:

• Noon, Wednesday, Dec. 24, to noon, Friday, Dec. 26,
• Noon, Wednesday, Dec. 31, to noon, Friday, Jan. 2, 2015.

Northern Virginia High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) Schedule and Other Information

• Wednesday, Dec. 24 − Normal HOV restrictions are in effect.
• Thursday, Dec. 25− HOV restrictions on Interstate 95, Interstate 395 and Interstate 66 are lifted. I-95/395 reversible lanes will be northbound on Christmas Day.
• Friday, Dec. 26− HOV restrictions on I-95, I-395 and I-66 are lifted. The I-95/395 reversible lanes will be northbound until 10:30 a.m. They will reopen southbound at 1 p.m.

Tolling begins Monday, Dec. 29, on the I-95 Express Lanes (between Edsall Road in Fairfax County and Garrisonville Road in Stafford County). Drivers will need either an E-ZPass Flex (for HOV-3 to ride free) or an E-ZPass to use the lanes at all times. Get more information at www.95expresslanes.com.

• Wednesday, Dec. 31: Normal HOV restrictions are in effect. I-95/395 reversible lanes will remain southbound through the evening and on New Year’s Day.
• Thursday, Jan. 1: HOV restrictions on I-395 and I-66 are lifted. I-95/395 reversible lanes will remain southbound until midnight and switch to northbound by 2 a.m. Friday, Jan. 2.
• Friday, Jan. 2: Normal HOV restrictions are in effect.
• 95 Express Lanes: Roadway improvements for the 29-mile corridor of the new I-95/395 Express Lanes, between Garrisonville Road in Stafford County and Edsall Road in Fairfax County, opened to traffic on Dec. 14.

Drivers are reminded to stay alert and use caution when driving in and around the Express Lanes corridor through the holidays, as new lanes, traffic patterns and access points are open.

Lane closures will be restricted during the holiday hours as listed above, but motorists should expect daytime and nighttime closures on this stretch of I-95/395 outside these designated dates while crews put finishing touches on the new roadway.

Lane Closures Lifted This Weekend for Labor Day Holiday

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will suspend most road work during the Labor Day travel period.

VDOT will lift lane closures on most interstates and highways in Virginia from noon Friday, Aug. 30, until noon Tuesday, Sept. 3.

511Virginia allows users to view real-time traffic cameras and see estimated travel times, electronic message signs and traffic maps, which can help travelers plan their routes accordingly.

Northern Virginia HOV Schedule

High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) restrictions on Interstate 66, Interstate 95 and Interstate 395 will be lifted on Monday, Sept. 2. Normal HOV restrictions will be in place on Friday, Aug. 30, and Tuesday, Sept. 3.

Direction schedule for the I-95/I-395 reversible lanes: Lanes will be southbound from noon Friday, Aug. 30, until 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31. The lanes will re-open northbound by 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, and remain northbound through 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept 3.

I-395/95 HOV Lane Closures Continue Today Through the Weekend

Mid-section of HOV Lanes Closed All Day Saturday

Continuing today, Friday, August 16 through Sunday, August 18, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will implement closures along the I-395/I-95 High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes as part of the 95 Express Lanes project.

The mid-section of the HOV Lanes between Turkeycock (Edsall Road) and Newington (Exit 169) will remain closed all day Saturday. Crews will be milling (removing the top layer of old asphalt) and paving the existing HOV lanes throughout the Express Lanes Corridor.

The following schedule will be in effect:

Friday night, August 16 by 11 p.m.

• Entire HOV lane facility closed from Washington, D.C. to Dumfries (Route 234).

Saturday morning, August 17 by 8 a.m.

• HOV lanes open to southbound traffic from Washington, D.C. to the Turkeycock (Edsall Road) exit where all southbound motorists must exit the HOV lanes and merge onto the I-395/I-95 general purpose lanes.
• HOV lanes closed between Turkeycock (Edsall Road) and Exit 161, U.S. Route 1.  
• Southbound 95 motorists may reenter the HOV lanes just south of Route 1 exit via a new dedicated temporary left-lane slip ramp, which will be open only on Saturday mornings during construction, view map here.

Saturday afternoon, by 2 p.m.

• HOV lanes closed for reversal operations.

Saturday afternoon, by 4 p.m.

• HOV lanes open northbound from Dumfries (Route 234) to Newington (Exit 169).
• HOV lanes closed between Newington (Exit 169) and Turkeycock (Edsall Road).
• Northbound traffic can reenter the HOV lanes at Turkeycock (Edsall Road).

Saturday night by 11 p.m.

• Entire HOV facilityclosed from Dumfries (Route 234) to Washington D.C.

Sunday morning, August 18 by 10 a.m.

• Entire HOV facility open to northbound traffic.

Crews will mill approximately two miles of the HOV lanes at a time and then repave with new asphalt, beginning at I-395 and Edsall Road and progress south on I-95 to Garrisonville Road. Crews will sweep milled surfaces to ensure the roadway is as smooth as possible, until paving is completed.

The milling and paving operations will continue through September. The work is necessary to prepare the HOV lanes for a traffic shift scheduled for this fall, and allow work on the new Express Lanes to advance.

I-395/95 HOV Lanes Extended Closures Scheduled for Next Two Weekends

June 21-23 and June 28-30

Weather permitting at 11 p.m. Friday night, June 21, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will close the high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes on I-395/95 from the Washington D.C. line to the end in Dumfries (Route 234) until 10 a.m. Saturday, June 22 and again on Saturday night at 11 p.m. until 10 a.m., Sunday morning, June 23.

Motorists should expect the following schedule:

Saturday morning, June 22 by 10 a.m.:

• HOV lanes open to traffic heading south from Washington D.C. to just before Turkeycock (Edsall Road), all HOV traffic will be directed to exit the lanes and merge onto the regular lanes of I-95 south.  
• HOV lanes closed between the Turkeycock (Edsall Road) and Franconia/Springfield Parkway. 
• HOV lanes open to traffic heading south of the Franconia-Springfield Parkway (Route 289) to Dumfries. Traffic can enter into the HOV lanes again just after the Franconia-Springfield Parkway/Newington via a left lane slip ramp. 
• No access to I-95 HOV lanes via the Franconia-Springfield Parkway.

Saturday afternoon, June 22, by 2 p.m.: HOV lanes will be closed for reversible operations.

Saturday afternoon, June 22, no later than 4 p.m.:

• HOV lanes open to traffic heading north from Dumfries to Newington. Near Newington, all HOV traffic will be directed to exit the lanes and merge onto the regular lanes of I-95 north. 
• HOV lanes closed between Newington and Turkeycock (Edsall Road). 
• HOV lanes open to traffic heading north from Turkeycock (Edsall Road) to Washington D.C. All traffic can enter into the HOV lanes again just after Edsall Road.

Sunday morning, June 23, by 10 a.m.: All lanes will open northbound.

Motorists should expect similar HOV closures during summer weekends.
